Hand the family the keys to a day they’ll actually talk about afterward.
You’ll take the wheel of your own 4×4 – a Honda Pioneer 700, built for up to 4 people – and drive it through the hills above Punta Cana. No experience needed; your guide covers the basics before you roll out, then the trail is yours: mud, hills, and open country all the way to a swim stop in the Anamuya River.
From there the day slows down. At Monkey Land, squirrel monkeys raised by a Canadian couple with more than 35 years of animal experience, including 12 at the Toronto Zoo, climb straight onto your shoulder looking for a snack. A stop at the Coconut House for fresh coffee and cacao rounds things out before the ride back.
It’s the kind of day that gets replayed at dinner and shows up in everyone’s camera roll for years after.
A note on the driving, since it is the part people ask about most. The Pioneer 700 seats four, so one licensed adult can take the whole family along – the driver needs to be eighteen with a year of experience behind them, but passengers just need to hold on. If two adults are travelling together, take two buggies and swap halfway; the trail is better from the driver’s seat.
And a note on the monkeys, since it is the part people remember. They come down to you rather than the other way around, and there is no guarantee about which shoulder one decides to sit on. Bring a hat you do not mind being grabbed, keep sunglasses on your face rather than pushed up on your head, and put anything loose in a zipped pocket before you walk in.
One caution worth reading twice: guests with a severe peanut allergy cannot take part in the Monkey Land half at all.
No licensed driver in your group, or short on time? Monkey Land also runs on its own as a 3-4 hour visit, with hotel pickup included.
